Examples are listed below, but if you can think of something not listed, contact us today and we will make it happen.

1) Tired of your boring and inaccurate stock tuners? Upgrade to high ratio standard or locking tuners from top-of-the-line brands such as Schaller, Grover, Sperzel, Kluson, and others.

2) Muddy and muted OEM pickups putting a damper on your jam sessions? Swap out those mass-produced imported pickups for something wound by hand right here in the USA! We offer a full line of hand wound pickups from Mojotone and Kent Armstrong as well as less expensive pickups from the Armstrong line. Stay tuned for our own hand-wound pickups later this year!

3) So now you have killer pickups but you still can’t get that tone that you’ve been seeking? Search no more. Falls Rock Shop will replace your stock low-end pots and switches with high-ed CTS, Bournes, Oak Grigsby, CLR, and Switchcraft products. We also use period-correct cloth covered wire and premium capacitors for maximum tone and vintage appeal. We can also set you up with several different wiring mods such as the Tele 4-way mod, cocked wah, Strat Blender, coil splitting/tapping, and many others.

4) Do you hear a swarm of bumble bees every time you strum an open G chord? If you do, your cheap plastic factory nut has finally thrown in the towel. Let us replace that tired old nut with a new Tusq self-lubricating nut, hand cut bone nut, Fender LSR Roller Nut, or even a brass nut if you’re feeling a little twangy! Upgrading your nut is one of the cheapest and quickest ways to correct action, intonation, and playability issues.

5) Flimsy stock tremolo on your Strat keeping you from playing the blues? Can’t seem to get that 3-barrel Tele bridge to hold a tune? Have the experts here at Falls Rock Shop set you with some of the best products on the market today from suppliers such as Gotoh, Joe Barden, Kluson, Schaller, and many others. We also offer tremolo stabilizers to help with tuning stability.

6) Does your guitar just need a “dress up”? We will replace your old pick guard, neck, or body and make your guitar look like new again!

7) Would you like to do the work yourself and just need parts from us? We can do that too. We are suppliers at many large and popular dealers (Allparts, WD Music, Mojotone, Gator cases, Audio-Technica, t.c. electronics, and more!) and can hook you up with great prices on any guitar part.

Custom Hand Wound Pickups

Hello from the guitar builder and all-around handyman here at Falls Rock Shop.  It’s been a while since I last wrote an article for the site, but that’s because I’ve been busy!  FRS has been building some killer axes both for customers’ custom orders as well as to put on display in some local shops.  We have also been busy building custom amps and developing a line of ultra-premium instrument, microphone and speaker cable.  I wanted to take the time to update all of our loyal readers on our most exciting new product: hand wound pickups!

When I’m designing and building an electric guitar, I try my best to stay true to my mission of mixing and melding old-school vintage designs into something totally unique.  A major part of that mission is modernizing wherever I can without intruding upon those hallowed instruments that Leo and Les designed.  All of these principles culminate at the heart of the electric guitar: the pickups.

A lot can be said about the acoustic impact of tone woods, fretboard materials, neck design, and all of the other factors that contribute to the assembly of a guitar. At the end of the day, nothing is more important to the sound an electric guitar makes than its pickups.  There has been an explosion recently of boutique winders.  At Falls Rock Shop, we wanted to expand into this market, but we wanted to do it the right way. We have spent countless hours reading vintage wind manuals from Fender and Gibson as well as studying the construction of vintage pickups.  We feel that our product holds up against some of the best boutique pickups on the market today.

You’re probably asking yourself, “What makes your pickups better than what came in my import Fender?”  Well, for starters, it’s all about the magnets.  Our flagship line of Strat pickups is called TumbleTweeds.  They feature staggered sand-cast AlNiCo V magnets.  The magnets in most $10-a-set import pickups are ceramic.  They’re harsh, abrasive, and more suited to heavily distorted industrial metal than smooth classic blues and rock.  We also use a myriad of different coil wire.  While the type of insulation doesn’t have a direct impact on the sound, each of the materials has a different thickness (or build) and that contributes to different coil thickness which in turn creates a different tone.  Scatter winding also gives us more of that ‘mojo’ compared to the sterile sound imparted by auto-traverse machine wound pickups.  Lastly, we use only the best flatwork and humbucker frames and finish each pickup with a 100% beeswax light potting (unless requested to be skipped by customer).  Potting keeps the coil from rubbing against itself and creating microphonics.  Some folks prefer the open and airy sound an unpotted coil creates.

Currently, we offer our TumbleTweeds in both Strat and Tele standalone sets as well as part of a loaded pickguard with premium CTS pots and CLR switches.  We also have a classic humbucker set that is a more modern version of a PAF.  We’re also working expanding our product offerings into P90s, mini humbuckers, and noiseless Strat sets.  I firmly believe that you would be hard-pressed to find better quality at a more attractive price point.  Check out some sound samples in our online store as well!!  You can purchase a set through our website.  We are also accepting orders for custom wound sets starting later this summer!  Stay tuned….
